Home Stephens Hammond Hyde Kile Stories Other

In the early part of the 20th century, there was no television. Movies were a limited treat for most people, so they made their own entertainment through talent shows, entertaining guests, reading, church events, and travel.

Summer camps must have been popular, based on the many advertisements in old newspapers. I found two or three Camp Highlands within travel distance of Atlanta.

For example, there is this camp for boys. It's not the one I was searching for.

The mystery of the lost summer camp: part 3

Further research on the Web opened a few more doors. The Girl Reserves were something like Girl Scouts or Campfire Girls, but affiliated with the YWCA, and Camp Highland was a YWCA summer camp.

Emory University Library's Special Collections Department had several YWCA documents and photographs, including a 1923 brochure.

The brochure included some interesting information and instructions for the girls, including the appropriate attire: bloomers, khaki middy shirts, and heavy shoes. What a place. And it's only $7 per week. What a deal.

This next picture is from the Emory University Library's Special Collections Department. It is interesting with the girls all lined up in their 1920s swimsuits. But it was only after I studied it that I saw my aunt Elsie in the photo. She's the third one from the right. What a weird coincidence.

Lost and found
But there was still a problem. Where in the world was this mysterious Camp Highland. Once again, the old library files came to the rescue. I found a map that showed travel directions to the camp.
